MANILA, Philippines — A P200,000 insurance payout was turned over to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Wednesday by the company that owned the truck in last December’s fatal multi-vehicle crash along Katipunan Avenue.

The road crash incident late evening Dec. 5 killed four people, injured 25 and involved a passenger bus, a 10-wheeler closed van, an L300 van, five cars, and 16 motorcycles.

“We will be using this insurance claim on top of the own budget of Hermano to reach to the victims that we can extend our help,” the legal counsel of the company explained Wednesday in a press conference with the LTO.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) said that it, along with dealer partner SJ Legacy Motors Inc., inaugurated their new branch at the SM City San Jose Del Monte on Sept. 27.

“Yung claims nga sa insurance is medyo maliit, so we understand that. The company is pooling funds din to at least reach out to the victims na lumapit na para lang din ma-alleviate yung unnecessary gastos na nangyari dahil sa aksidente,” he added.

(The insurance claim is rather small, so we understand that. The company is pooling funds as well to at least reach out to the victims that approached us so that we can alleviate the unnecessary expenses as a result of the accident.)

Further, the company’s representative said they were still processing other insurance claims to fund additional aid for victims.

“We understand it’s not enough, it’s far from what we would want it to be. Pero (But) any help that can be done will be most appreciated,” LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza said at the press conference to mark the turnover.

In its investigation, the LTO found that the truck involved in the accident was “unfit to be operated” and ordered a 90-day preventive suspension on the registration of the truck.

According to Mendoza, they were expecting P100,000 from the compulsory motor vehicle insurance coverage but an Insurance Commission memorandum effective last March raised the amount to P200,000.
